History and characteristics
The Weißburgunder - Pinot Blanca stylish representative of the Burgundy family, is a mutation of Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder) and is well-travelled. Weißburgunder, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Blanco and Klevner are its names. The Pinot family probably originates from the region between the Rhône Valley in France and western Switzerland around Lake Geneva. It dates back to 2,000 years ago and arrived in German-speaking countries with the Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages.
Today, Pinot Blanc occupies a total vineyard area of around 1,850 hectares in Austria. Most of it is in Burgenland in the Leitha Mountains and on Lake Neusiedl. Here in the March region, it produces very elegant, fine to full-bodied varieties.
In a way, Pinot Blanc is the versatile musician in the vineyard - often in harmony with other white Burgundy varieties in a cuvée. Due to its finesse, we only produce it as a single variety. With an elegant bouquet, delicately floral and sometimes somewhat restrained - but always accompanied by a mature acidity structure. When matured, it shows notes of bread and nuts and is very balanced.
LEAVES: medium-sized, pentagonal, with three to five lobes and moderate incision depth.
The GRAPES: medium-sized, dense-berried, cylindrical with shoulders.
The BERRIES: roundish to oval, with a thin, yellow-green skin.
With high soil and site requirements, it feels most at home on very calcareous, well-supplied and deep soils.

A Whiter Shade of Pale
The Weißburgunder at the March
Pinot Blanc, which has been at home in the March region for many years, has basically always played first fiddle here. In many places, it was often an inconspicuous and unimpressive wine without characteristics.
However, if you work with it skillfully on our chalky soils and work accordingly in the vineyard, you will get great wines con espressione. On our estate, it grows in the Reinthal and Vogelsang vineyards.
