REGION
Down by the Riverside

Ollersdorf is a small village in the wine-growing municipality of Angern an der March. It lies on the foothills of the first southern wine hills of the Weinviertel and on the northern edge of the Marchfeld. This is exactly where our winery is located, around an hour north-east of Vienna.

It is around two kilometres as the crow flies from us to the border river Morava or March. There used to be a bridge to Slovakia, today we take the ferry to get to our neighbouring country. The climatic and regulating effects of the March extend as far as our vineyards.

Along the March

The Marchfeld forms the largest plain in Austria and - as part of the Weinviertel - is known as Austria's granary and vegetable storehouse. In the east of the region, the March forms the border with Slovakia, while in the south the Marchfeld is bordered by the Danube - the second longest river in Europe and an important part of the Donau-Auen National Park.

Ollersdorf in the south-eastern Weinviertel lies on the edge of the Marchfeld, where the Pannonian climate influence is already noticeable.

The best grapes thrive there in our top vineyards: Ried Reinthal, Ried Viertel and Ried Vogelsang on soils of limestone, loess, clay and sand as well as black earth. In combination with the microclimate on the March, ideal conditions prevail for Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Burgundy and aromatic grape varieties such as Muscat - right up to the high predicate levels of sweet wines.

Climate

Where the Sunshine is

In the south-eastern Weinviertel, where we are at home, the climate is Pannonian (Central European-subcontinental). This means hot summers and cold winters. The rapid change from winter to spring is characteristic of this region.

Overall, it is rather dry here, as the region lies in the rain shadow of the Alps. Most - often heavy - precipitation falls in summer, but persistent long periods of rain are rare. There is relatively little snow in winter.

The climate in numbers:

Annual mean temperature: 10,4 °C

Annual sunshine duration per year: 2.000 hours

Total annual precipitation: Ø 548 mm

Summer days (max. over 25 °C): 55 bis 65 per year

Hot days (max. over 30 °C): 15 per year

Strong wind days (wind peaks greater than 60 km/h): 15-35 per year
